You will see a variety of different answers to this question probably thousands if you google the question. I think a good coach, whether it’s a life coach; small Business coach; losing weight coach; or career coach is someone who can develop a good level of rapport/ trust and non-judgmental attitude to someone in order for them to fully open up. In this type of relationship it is much easier for someone to start to understand themselves better, take stock of where they are and develop strategies to move forward or deal with any issues. Primarily coaching involves helping you to bring out these issues yourself. You will have experienced this type of rapport when talking to friends or family when you know they have been fully listening to you and been on your side.
Again google this and you will get all sorts of answers. Basically it is coaching centre around your worklife. This could be going through a whole series of steps to look at what career you maybe best suited for or you will get the most happiness out of, or I have had clients who simply just want to talk about personality clashes at work and they needed someone objective to talk to, to get ‘things’ out of their system. Other issues that can come up include:-
Discussing resume presentations
Dealing with difficult people
In my own case the salient points for career coaching include an academic background in Psychology and Occupational Psychology (basically business psychology) along with 18 years Recruitment experience covering a variety of industries including; Finance; IT; Manufacturing; Engineering and more recently Technical and Managerial positions within the aerospace sector. Some of the best coaches out there aren’t right for everybody; the most important aspects really come down to how comfortable you feel when you talk to your coach; how easy is it for you to open up and feel free to discuss personal issues.
Cost – The cost is an hourly rate (normally spent on the phone) based on the individuals situation and status.
